What is the best time of year to surf in Portugal?

You can surf in Portugal all year round, but each season has its own character. The answer depends on your level, the coast you pick and what you are after.

An honest answer: it depends

There is no perfect season, and anyone who promises one is simplifying. I spend the year on the beach photographing, and the light, wind and sea change a lot from month to month. There are glassy days in summer and stormy days in winter, and both have their beauty for those who know what they want.

What holds for everyone: always check the wave and wind forecast on the day, ask someone who knows the spot and choose a break that suits your level. The notes below are general guidelines, not guarantees.

West coast: Cascais, Sintra, Ericeira, Peniche

This is the area most exposed to the Atlantic and it gets swell for most of the year. As a rule, from autumn to spring the sea is bigger and more consistent, with waves that call for experience. In summer it is usually smaller and more manageable, which is great for beginners. On the west coast the northerly wind is common in summer, especially in the afternoon, so the early morning hours are usually the best.

The Algarve

The Algarve's south coast is more sheltered and gets waves mainly when there is a south or south-westerly swell, so it is less consistent. The Algarve's west coast, around Sagres and Vila do Bispo, receives Atlantic swell more reliably, with breaks that work in different winds. The water is usually a little milder than on the west coast further north.

The Azores and Madeira

The islands receive swell from far away and have their own character, with many waves over rocky bottoms and sometimes limited access. In broad terms, winter brings more waves and more power, and summer brings calmer conditions. Before heading to the islands, learn about each spot properly and go with someone who knows it.

Water temperature and crowds

Water in the Portuguese Atlantic is usually fresh all year, colder in winter and spring, milder in late summer and autumn. That means a wetsuit all year, in different thicknesses depending on the season: we have a guide on wetsuits. As for crowds, summer is the busiest, with lots of surfers and schools on the beaches, while winter usually has fewer people but more demanding conditions.

Choosing by your level and your goal

If you have just started, summer and early autumn are usually friendlier. If you already surf confidently and like bigger waves, autumn, winter and early spring bring more swell. If you are visiting and want to combine surfing with beach time and sightseeing, September usually balances sea, temperature and crowds well.
