Surf guide / Equipment

Basic surf equipment for beginners

To start surfing you do not need much kit, but what you need has to be right. This is the checklist I would give a friend.

Surf guide / Equipment

The essentials, in order of importance

I see many beginners on the beach with the wrong kit: a board that is too small, a worn leash, no sun protection. You do not need to spend a lot, but there are items worth investing in, especially those that affect safety and comfort.

Here are the pieces, one by one. Remember that BAD SURF PHOTO only does photography and video: we do not sell or rent equipment and we do not teach, so we have no interest in what you buy.

Board, leash and fins

The board is the centre of it all. To begin with, a soft-top or funboard with plenty of volume is usually the easiest starting point; we have a guide on how to choose a surfboard. The leash links the board to your ankle and should be roughly the length of the board, in good condition, with a firm velcro strap. The fins must fit properly in their boxes and be tightened securely.

Wax and deck pad

To avoid slipping off the board you need grip: wax applied where you stand, or a deck pad, which is an adhesive traction mat. Wax comes in versions for colder and warmer water; choose according to the sea temperature. Many soft-top boards already have a non-slip surface and do not need wax.

Wetsuit, boots and rash vest

In Portugal a wetsuit is almost essential, in a thickness that varies by season: we have a dedicated guide. In summer, a rash vest protects you from the sun and from board rash. On colder days, boots and a hood make the session much more pleasant.

Sun protection and extras

Use waterproof sun cream, especially on your face, ears and the back of your neck, and reapply. A hat or cap for before and after the session helps, as do sunglasses for the beach. A water bottle, a snack and a big towel for changing are simple but very useful extras.

Bag and transport

A board bag protects the board from knocks and sun, which extends its life. A waterproof bag or bucket helps you carry a wet wetsuit home. Never leave the board in the sun inside a car: the heat ruins it fast.

If you would like a memory of your first day of surfing, BAD SURF PHOTO does photography and video: photo €40 per hour, video €50 per hour, plus VAT, editing included and delivery in 48 hours. Book on WhatsApp.

FAQ

Quick questions.

What do I really need for my first session?

A board, leash, a wetsuit suited to the season and sun protection. If you have a lesson with a school, the basic kit is usually sorted by them.

Do I need wax?

If the board has no non-slip surface, yes. On many soft-tops it is not needed.

How long should the leash be?

As a rule, about the length of the board. Ask someone who knows your gear.
