Carcavelos

Urban, consistent and photogenic beach break, with multiple peaks and fast access to Lisbon.

Spot notes

Photographing surf in Carcavelos

Carcavelos is one of the most intense lines on the Cascais coast. On clean days it offers fast walls, barrels and strong sections; on smaller days it becomes an accessible option for technical sessions and water portraits.

Conditions

Works best with west to southwest swell and light north wind. Tide and sandbanks change the framing a lot.

Photo angle

The seafront road makes it easy to vary quickly between front, side and tighter angles. Ideal for complete sequences.

Surf photographer in Carcavelos: how it works

Carcavelos is the most accessible beach break on the Cascais line: the train stops right there, the beach is wide and there are peaks for every level. It is where I shoot most sessions, and the easiest place to arrange at short notice.

I shoot from the beach with a telephoto lens, so nothing changes for you: surf as usual and I take care of the rest. We agree on the spot and time the day before, based on the swell, wind and tide forecast.
